Growing Leaders

In a recent post I talked about the need to infuse IT professionals with business, leadership and interpersonal skills. Easier said than done for some, but still possible and a worthy effort. In the coming weeks, I'll discuss some of the principles we use as we try to grow our leaders from within.

  1. Accountablity, 7/14

  2. Learn, 9/30

  1. As a former ICS employee I can say with strong evidence that some of the best leaders in the IT industry are in ICS as well as some of the worst. There does not seem to be any middle ground. I loved my experiences working in ICS but I encountered the absolute best and worst leadership in my career within ICS. I hope that this effort to grow leadership internally is successful.

  2. How much effort is spent attempting to infuse business/leadership types with technical skills?

[Joel: Recently I gave a presentation to folks at the Church on social networking and how it's changing everything. The intent wasn't to teach technical skills, but to increase familiarity with technologies and they could be applied. We should do this a lot. Teaching technical skills to business folks, however, isn't a productive use of time, imo.]

  3. Seems to me leadership skills are a big missionary tool, too. Scouting has been a wonderful arena for LDSleadership to grow and shine. http://www.leadershipnow.com/
