[joel (10:50pm, 4/10): I mention a May beta release of lds.org, but these features actually come in the June release.]
We've just released our second iPhone app: Gospel Lbry. [joel: corrected.]
It's on the iPhone app store now. You can download and access the scriptures, hymns, various manuals, proclomations and so forth. It's got some pretty nifty features that some of the main scripture apps out there don't have. And it's free.
When the May beta.lds.org comes out, you'll be able to sync annotations with your online gospel study experience.
This, like our Mormon Channel app, was developed in cooperation with community developers. Thanks all!!
Download it and try it out. And rate it!! :)
Syncing annotations with the Church's website is a fantastic idea. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteLooks like the app is actually called Gospel Lbry.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good idea. But is there anything for regular people who can't afford an iPhone? Maybe an app that we can run from our laptops while we're on the train or riding in a car? I just can't imagine there is a very high percentage of church members who own an iPhone.
ReplyDelete[joel: Yes. We're working on versions for Palm Pre, Blackberry, Windows Mobile and Android. We are also working on a web version anyone will be able to access as long as they have Internet and the appropriates browser(s).]
Please support Android! I don't know if you have been following the Apple/Adobe conflicts lately but Apple ethics have gotten even worse (if that's possible) by prohibiting all cross-platform development tools. I understand iPhone has the largest user base but hopefully by developers taking a stand, that will change. I would hope that the Church would fully support an open platform such as Android over the closed and controlling company that is Apple.
ReplyDelete[Joel: Android version is now available on the store.]
The best gospel library app in the App Store. Hands down. I love its speed and interface.
ReplyDeleteI have been waiting for something like this, absolutely wonderful. I was happy to see so many options for a version 1.0 release. Great job. I especially love that you can have multiple screens (like safari) so it is so easy to jump back and forth between lessons and scriptures.
ReplyDeleteMy only real concern right now is menu access. For example, having the teachings of the presidents manuals tucked away under study helps/general conference/other/youth/other/teachings of the presidents seems hard to find and access. Perhaps you are working on a fix for the next release?
I can't complain, this is such a wonderful app. Love the interface and how everything works so well together. Thanks for all of your hard work.
For your web versions, you mentioned appropriate browsers, I hope this includes safari :)
Awesome! This is just what I've been waiting for!
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned the app was made with the help of community developers, what do you have to do to help? I am an iPhone developer and would love to help out.
reinstalled the app, everything is perfectly in its place. Thanks so much for such a wonderful app!
ReplyDeleteThanks for doing this - there are some really good apps out there already but having something that is both free and has the backing of the Church is a good option to have.
ReplyDeleteI had the same issue as Ryan - where the "Other" content was buried under the Scriptures / Study Helps / Other category. I reinstalled, and of course had to re-download the content I wanted. But it is now behaving properly. Seems to be an odd glitch that it doesn't work right first time around.
Also, I found that the search would hang if I typed more than a word - e.g. searching for the hymn title "How Firm a Foundation" caused it to hand for an extended period after each new word was typed. There's no progress indicator to suggest that the non-responsiveness is caused by activity in the background.
But thanks again - these are minor niggles with a great app.
Request: Verse-based bookmarking, and bookmark syncing.
ReplyDelete@ Jan - when you do the search and it seems to hang, which it did for me as well, you will notice a little flicker next to the 'spotlight' icon. It looks like it the spinning circle (not beach ball) but in white, so it barely shows up. I think it is working in the background, but just takes an extended period of time. Glad that it is working for you now as well :)
ReplyDeleteAh, yes, - it would be visible if it wasn't on a mostly white background - it needs to be a different color to make the spinning wheel more apparent. Even so, it doesn't allow you to continue typing at least some of the time, so there is some hanging going on, even if it's searching at the same time, so it's not ideal from a UI point of view.
ReplyDeleteIs it possible to re-sort alphabetically the songs in the Children’s Songbook?
ReplyDeleteGreat app, looking forward to see if it will be scaled up for the iPad.
